Many people do not realize that if they have neck pain they will probably end up getting back pain. This is because the two are usually related. I remember a time when I had what my doctor thought were migraine headaches. These went on for years until a friend of mine told me it didn't sound like migraine but it sounded like I had a neck problem. Sure enough when I started to go to physical therapy and have my neck treated, the headaches went away.

The reason many people with neck pain get back pain is because so much stress is on the muscles of the neck that it is bound to affect the back. It is also true that back pain can be the cause of neck pain. So it works both ways.

If you are in severe pain with either your neck or your back, you need to go to your doctor. Many times severe pain is the outcome of a problem that has been building up for a while. Many doctors recommend physical therapy for neck and back pain or chiropractic care.

Sometimes pain cannot be avoided due to an accident and injury of some sort. However if you have not been injured there are many things you can do to prevent neck and back pain. Not the least of which is to maintain a good posture. This means no slouching in your chair as you are reading this article. One of the best things you can do for yourself is sleep on a good quality mattress. When I changed mattresses in there was an unbelievable difference in my level of pain. In fact my pain pretty much melted away once ahead of good mattress.

There are two practical things women can do to prevent neck and back pain. These are to carry a fanny pack instead of a purse and to carry your baby or toddle as near to the middle as you can. What I mean by this is don’t put your child on one hip all the time, try to switch hips or carry them against your stomach so they are not on one side.

Men can try lifting things correctly. Don’t bend over and lift with your back, but squat down and lift with your legs.
